Promises are the threads that weave trust and security into our relationships, but devastation can be wreaked when they are unexpectedly broken, and friendships become fragile and even severed. The bitterness of a broken heart can often leave us feeling betrayed, disappointed and damaged beyond repair, but these occurrences happen all the time.
Vows are personal expressions of commitments and promises people make to one another, sometimes in the heat of the moment. They make declarations of love, loyalty and allegiances with promises to offer help and support during times of crisis and difficulties. Some mean it, others don’t. Love is an endless act of courage, not how many days, months or years you have known a person. It’s about honouring your promises and whilst showing the same amount of respect, care of duty, responsibility and gratitude.
In a world where certain covenants, pledges and oaths are worthless, and where promises seldom means anything, it is difficult to trust or believe anyone or anything. It is not possible to control someone’s loyalty. No matter how good, kind or generous you are to them doesn’t mean that they will treat you the same. No matter how much they mean to you, it doesn’t mean that they will value you the same. Some people will practice blind faith, refusing to believe that they have been deceived. Even if there is enough evidence to prove it, they will still insist on turning a blind eye because they cannot face the feelings that go with rejection, disappointment, the nagging doubts, sleepless nights and crippling loneliness, and so they continue to delude themselves. They want to believe in the fairytale, not the harsh reality of the real truth about what is really happening around them. This is why it’s important to observe people’s actions rather than willingly take them at their word. Always be careful in whom you place your trust because betrayal always come from the persons you least expected to cause you harm.
Broken vows are like mirrors and can never be restored because the cracks will always be there as evidence of betrayal. The offenders leave those who faithfully held on to the hope that things would eventually improve disillusioned, and in utter despair and disbelief because of their shattered dreams, such is the power of gross let downs and disrespect. Your word is your honour, so once broken, your reputation will never be restored to its former glory. Some people are incapable of understanding the full implications or consequences of broken promises, and neither do they understand nor care about the resulting implications and consequences. To them, words don’t mean anything. Liars tend to make the best empty promises.
