Books Are Friends

Hello Readers,

Bookshops and Libraries are the only piece of evidence we have that people are still ‘thinking’. The mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it’s to keep its sharp edge. No matter how busy you may think you are, you must always find time for reading or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance. A whole new world opens up to a person who wants to read books and a home without books is alike a body without a soul. There is nothing else that furnishes a house quite like books sitting in their book cases, waiting to be chosen and read that will transport you, as if by magic, to a place you have never before experienced. A home without books is like a body without a soul because in between the pages of a book information that was unknown to you before.

From a very young age I developed a passion for reading books that has served me all my life as nothing quite ignites the imagination as becoming immersed in a really good book. There is always room for higher learning, self-development and studying. There is nothing worse than finding yourself left behind because you showed little or no interest in learning anything new. People who read will always have something to converse about because even if you find yourself stuck in the company of strangers, you can always talk about a book you have enjoyed reading. Never ever criticise anyone if they accidently mispronounce a word because it means they learned that word by reading it somewhere. They have made a real effort, which is highly commendable.

Ignorance is not bliss because ignorance disarms you and sets you apart from other people. Once you learn to read you will be forever free because knowledge is power. The books that will help you the most are the ones that make you think the most and you cannot open a book without learning something. A book is a device to ignite and stretch the imagination and a book is a dream that you hold in your hand. No matter what your status in life, the lover of books is the richest and the most happiest. The first time I read an excellent book, I felt as though I have made a new friend because sometimes a little bit of reading is the only therapy that is needed.  A book is a companion.  Interestingly, someone once told me that if you read a lot, you are considered well read, but if you watch a lot of television, you are not necessarily considered well viewed.

Once you learn the joy of reading, a whole new world of discovery opens up and you will never look back. It will become an addiction that you will enjoy more than anything else because gaining information and self-educating yourself will not only propel your forwards, but it will connect you to other likeminded individuals. When people complain that they cannot afford to purchase books and I am only too aware of how many libraries have now closed down, if you are a Kindle owner, you can download ‘free books’ and there are literally, thousands to choose from.  There is nothing to stop anyone from borrowing or exchanging books with their family and friends. There are also lots of places where free books are available to read as long as they are returned at a later date. There are also lots of Book Clubs that are free to join and this is also a fabulous way of connecting with other likeminded people and forming new friendships. These clubs can be found online and also held at numerous Bookshops all over the country, so no one need ever feel stuck in a rut, because there are always people out there to meet and chat with where you will discover you have much in common.

Reading in times of digital content is changing, but it doesn’t mean it gives less pleasure, probably just  the opposite. There is absolutely no difference between a hard cover book, an audio book or a multimedia application. There is no difference between high quality paper or reading stuff on a computer. The biggest pleasure comes from ‘what we read’, not from on ‘what we read’.

If there is a book you want to read that has not yet been written, then you must write it, but there also comes a time when you have to choose between turning the page or closing the book, and on a final note,  always read something that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.

‘Not all readers are leaders, but all readers are leaders’.

Until Next Week,

Love and Light,

Linda and The Lulas xxx
