One of the greatest mistakes any of us can make is assuming, believing that we know another person through and through, because nothing is further from the truth. We can live with a partner, be close to a best friend for many years and then one day realise that we never knew anything about them at all and that’s when the shock waves start kicking in the realisation that hits us like a ton of bricks when we honestly thought we knew everything about a certain person or people and then the moment of truth reveals that we knew nothing at all.
All people are multi sided. The nearest I can describe this is that we are all like the ‘Rubix Cube’. All people tell lies. They all have secrets. They all tell lies to protect their secrets. We can invest enormous time and energy to ‘know’ another person, but in the end, how close can we really come to that person’s essence?’ We try to convince ourselves that we know the other person well, but do we really know anything about anyone?’
We take for granted what we know about other people. We utter phrases like ‘Oh that’s so out of character’, without a second thought to what that saying really means.
Take for example people who live double lives. The ones who live in two different households with two different families within only a few miles of one another and get away with all the lies and deceit for years.
There are people working in top secret governement careers who cannot disclose the truth about their work even to their nearest and dearest and so live a lie. There are the ones who conduct affairs that carry on for years and years without their spouses ever discovering the truth. Have you ever been told ‘I just dont know him or her anymore’ by someone that cared about this person? I hear these stories on a daily basis. Nothing surprises nor shocks me anymore about people.
Since the arrival of social media its even easier to to split our characters into two, three or more faces. We can be annonymous, faceless. It makes it easier to throw insults or compliments in a way never countenenced by a person before, hence the unearthing of so called, respectable, pillars of the earth types who turn out to be the worst, scathing, destructive, internet trolls ever known. Just take a look at all the recent publicity regarding internet scammers, con men and women who have managed to extract huge amounts of money from innocent, yet extremely naive, individuals who were easy targets on numerous dating sites. The newspapers and telly are full of these stories and warnings not to go into on line relationships blindly, wearing rose tinted specs, all because they are looking for love.
You never can understand anyone until you consider things from his or her point of view and until you have climbed into their skin and walked around in it.
There is a mammoth difference between knowing someone and knowing about them. You can never really know someone completely. You can only spend your life fooling yourself that you do. I have even heard people say ‘I know you better than you know yourself’. Such a mistake because these people are must be utterly deluded and living on a totally different planet.
The only person who knows YOU, is YOU, no one else.
